Birmingham Museum of Art

The Birmingham Museum of Art reached out with a need for an engaging animation to be projected along the surface of a large event-styled tent for a fundraising gala. The art direction ultimately changed for this project and so this animation was, lamentably, never used. However, a dear friend and long-time creative collaborator, We Time Audio House, gave this creatively marooned project new life by creating a dynamic piece of sound design.

Role + Process:

3D modeling, lighting, texturing, rendering, and video editing.
All geometry and animation was created with Cinema 4D. Lighting was handled with Octane Render. Texturing was completed with Octane Render's native material system. Mild color correction was handled in post production with Premiere Pro.

Sound design was created by the immensely inspiring We Time Audio House

The goal for this project was to create an abstraction of an architectural sculpture on display at the BMoA, the above image is my interpretation of this piece
In wanting to create something engaging but not over stimulating, I limited myself to simple material and textural choices to emphasize the motion of this animation without being distracting
To introduce visual contrast into the animation, I relied on the inclusion of this visually striking shade of neon yellow, which juxtaposes nicely with the otherwise tame color palette
Sometimes the hardest part of working in 3D, at least in my experience, is deciding which angle a particular asset should be viewed from. In an effort to capture this unique piece's many design facets, I explored several camera perspectives
Beyond simple color juxtapostion, I also wanted to explore textural variance with the inclusion of relatively diffuse materials alongside specular assets. There's something about highly reflective tinted glass that's always captured my eye!
